Switching, in three steps.

Files stay in Downloads, DCIM and the rest of storage. A new app reads the same folders.

1

Install the new file manager

Pick one from the table. Keep Files by Google for now.

2

Open a file with it

Open a download, tap Open with, pick the new app, then Always. Or set the default in Settings, Apps.

3

Add servers if you want

Voyager and Solid Explorer can add a NAS or a cloud next to the phone. Or stay local.

Questions, answered.

What is the best Files by Google alternative for Android?

Start with Voyager if you want a modern look and your servers in the same list. Material Files if you want something clean and quick. Solid Explorer if two panes and a fingerprint lock matter.

Will I lose my files?

No. Files stay in Downloads, DCIM and the rest of storage. A new app reads the same folders.

Can I go back to Files by Google?

Yes. Open a file, tap Open with, pick Files, then Always. Or set the default in Settings, Apps.

Can Voyager see Google Drive?

Voyager lists local files and the servers you add. Drive stays in the Drive app unless you add it as a server.

Do I need an account?

Not for Voyager, Material Files, Solid Explorer or Fossify File Manager. Clouds you add keep their own sign-in.

Keep going.
