Saved places in Google Maps stay in Google Maps. The new app starts with its own maps and can download a country for offline use.

Install the new maps app

Pick one from the table. Keep Google Maps for now.

Download a map if you want offline

CoMaps, OsmAnd, HERE WeGo and Magic Earth can store a region on the phone.

Set it as the default

Open a place or an address, tap Open with, pick the new app, then Always. Or leave both installed.

Questions, answered.

What is the best Google Maps alternative for Android?

Start with CoMaps if you want offline maps and no account. Citymapper if you want every way across town. Mapy.com if you hike. OsmAnd if you want every layer.

Will my saved places move?

Not by themselves. Lists in Google Maps stay in Google Maps. The new app starts clean, or you export a list if the maker offers it.

Can I go back to Google Maps?

Yes. Open Google Maps, or set it as the default in Settings, Apps, Default apps.

Does CoMaps work without the internet?

Yes. Download a region once. Walking, cycling and driving stay on the phone.

Do I need an account?

Not for CoMaps, Mapy.com or OsmAnd. Citymapper can work without one; an account keeps favourites.
